Our story walks have received a makeover!
After an unforeseen lamination shortage and some creative thinking, Islandport is offering two new and improved story walk formats. Story walks deconstruct and enlarge picture books onto individual spreads printed on durable plastic materials. These pages can be planted or posted in library gardens, parks, trails, schools, downtown storefronts, and other public spaces to create fun and active literary adventures! Customers can now order their story walks on either synthetic pages or on coroplast with stakes.
Synthetic pages are made of tearproof, weatherproof plastic that are about as thick as cardstock. They can be taped or velcroed onto walls or yardsticks, or popped into semi-permanent or permanent display cases. Each page is 11-inches by 17-inches with 16 total pages.
Coroplast is a thick, corrugated plastic (similar to cardboard) that is weather-proof and sturdy. Best of all, the Coroplast story walks come with 16 metal H-stakes making the pages ready to display. Each of the 16 pages is 18-inches by 12-inches.
This update comes after five years of Islandport’s story walk production. The StoryWalk® Project, created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, provides an innovative and delightful way for young readers—and older ones too!—to combine reading and being outside.
With ten children’s books to choose from, Islandport’s story walk initiative really took off in 2020. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Maine libraries and bookstores were looking for ways to continue engaging with the public in meaningful ways and our story walks provided the perfect solution.
Today, story walks have grown in popularity and can be found in parks, libraries, schools and walking trails throughout the state of Maine. We are excited to see where our new story walk offerings end up—they might end up closer than you think!
